Keith Lewis`s Mica Collection is full of elegant copper and gold tones. Handcrafted of mica, 23K goldleaf, white pearls, gold filled earwire; 2 inches L x 3/8 inch W.
Keith Lewis uses a mineral called mica which has been shellacked together forming an amber colored natural material. He laminates layers of this amber mica to form the structure of the piece of jewelry, then applies 23K goldleaf and insets natural pearls and precious stones. He contrasts this formal construction with serendipitous surface treatments such as his version of a very old Japanese patina; he heats copper to bright red, exposes it to wood particles, and then plunges it into boiling water which creates an organic and unpredictable `Raku` effect. He strives to capture not only the beauty of the natural materials themselves, but the surprises that arise from working with them. |
