Thom and Sue Kellam handcraft their boxes from locally grown cherry wood. Each is carefully finished with a waxed natural oil to allow the wood to show the tree’s true colors.
Every design from the Kellam Studio is the product of Thom’s many years as an artist and woodworker. At the age of four he began playing with wood at a workbench his grandfather built for him. He built all the furniture for his home while still in college. Over the years he has perfected his skills with such teachers as Sam Maloof and Wendel Castle. Sue left her career as a studio potter to join Thom in the woodworking studio. Today they share in the production of their beautiful cherry boxes which are represented in homes and collections throughout the world.
Honor the Tree "The best way to honor the locally grown Cherry trees that lose their lives to make our boxes possible is to allow each piece of wood to freely express its character. Just as no two people have the same fingerprints, each piece of wood has a unique grain pattern.
